Fire Safety for Residential Buildings

आवासीय भवन के लिए अग्नि सुरक्षा

Apartment blocks and multi-storey housing, where many families share stairs, corridors and services.

Fire safety context

Residential buildings fall under the first occupancy group in the National Building Code. People sleep there, so a night-time fire is a particular concern, and occupants may be children, older people or people with limited mobility.

In multi-storey housing the stairs, corridors, lift lobbies and basements are shared. Keeping them clear and protected matters as much as the equipment installed.

Key considerations

  • Shared escape routes

Staircases and corridors must stay clear of storage and obstructions.

  • Warning for sleeping occupants

Alarm and detection arrangements need to be audible and dependable at night.

  • Water supply for upper floors

Taller buildings rely on risers, tanks and pumps to deliver water at height.

  • Basements and parking

Enclosed parking can trap smoke and needs specific consideration.

Every building is different

These are general considerations. We do not offer identical solutions for all buildings; requirements are assessed for each building against the regulations that apply.
